Up Bright and Shiny early [Jul. 11th, 2004|08:24 am]
[mood |awake]

Here I am, awake at 8 am on a Sunday morning. Keith and I forgot to close our blinds last night which means that I started not sleeping so well beginning with the sunrise. So I am up, being productive and at least checking my email and stuff before I get started with the tasks for the day. I always hate Sundays. That's because Mondays follow them. I already feel like my weekend's over for some reason.

I'll be a nice fiancee and let Keith sleep in a little. Then we both have an agenda....

Write more later....

Chillin' Out [Jul. 10th, 2004|10:56 pm]
[mood |busybusy]

Today was pretty hectic but I'm pretty happy because I actually got to spend it focusing on my shit.

By that I mean there was no social gatherings, no visits to relatives, no work, nothing except WHATEVER I WANTED TO DO. We had an invite to go out Friday night and today, but bagged it. Not interested at all. This was our first weekend to ourselves in at least a month and our apartment was a wreck, the hamster cage needed cleaning, our bills needed to be paid, and our plants were wilting.

I always feel like when my home is a wreck, it always pretty accurately reflects the current state of my life. So, I really needed to stay home an attend to personal matters. It doesn't sound like a lot of fun, but its a treat for me because its all about ME.

I rewarded myself by going to see Shrek 2 which I never saw the first one on the big screen but loved it when I finally saw it. I think I like the second one a bit better.

Tomorrow I will be focusing on the ol' permanent employment search which is bound to be a booster. Yesterday's incident only reminded me further the hell of temping, graduate student or not. I am employing more agressive tactics as going the preferred route (as according to most universities and colleges) and I'll see where the results take me.

(Higher ed jobs usually involves you applying to a machine, which scans your resume, and getting absolutely NO personal feedback---except one time for a position at BU's School of Management which I ALMOST got, but it wasn't exactly my ideal starting spot either anyway.)

Crisis Averted [Jul. 9th, 2004|07:43 pm]

The hazards of being a temp...

Okay, having the endure the trials and tribulations of temp work has its moments like today.

Today, I was told at 2 pm by one of my co-workers that as I had absolutely nothing to do here (seriously, there were 4 of us in the office doing absolutely nothing) that the boss (who was on vacation) wanted today to be my last day instead of this upcoming Wednesday. Talk about great notice at 2 pm on a Friday. Boy, I'm so glad I finished my projects in a timely fashion!!! I get to lose wages! YAAAAAY!

So I did want any temp would do...

I fired off an email to my "agent" "pimp" whatever, and she said she'd put me on the "hot list" for a short term assignment. It didn't instill great confidence. I wanted an answer NOW.

You see this wouldn't be such a problem if I wasn't out of town July 18 to 25th on a CRUISE. YES! Short term assignments are actually harder to place than longer term assignments. This assignment, my first with Spherion, lasted me almost 4 months and it paid great, and it was at Harvard Law School. But a mere one week assignment is hard to find when you are a quality temp like myself. And there are no assignments where you can say, "Oh, I have this great temp for you, she can come in this week, and then she just needs another week off immediately, and then...." No. It just doesn't happen.

So I brainstormed. My old temp agency was really cool...I never went a day without work, and, they were really prompt. I only left them because they didn't have higher ed opps which is what I'm planning on making a career out of...so naturally I need the experience in this area.

But I gave them a call. We left on good terms. I no sooner hit "send" on my email to Jason and I had a job in Jamaica Plains with a cool non-profit. They just need someone Monday through Wednesday.

So life turned out good. I still get to maintain my time off, I still get Thursday and Friday off to do job search stuff and meet my graduate advisor and then I am off to the BAHAMAS.

For any of you who like a little temp humor visit: http://www.notmydesk.com

Have a great Friday nite!

Me, the story of my life continued [Jul. 9th, 2004|02:12 pm]
Ok...here goes...no clue what else to write...

My name is Alyssa, I live currently south of Boston, but I'm movin' on up in September to reduce my commute. I am engaged to be married Sept. 3, 2005. My man is a wonderful guy, his name is Keith, we met in college and started going steady 5 years before the date of our wedding. We both went to Franklin & Marshall, a college no one has ever heard of in Lancaster, PA. We are both transplants to New England from Pennsylvania, and are doing very well.

Keith studies religion, and no, I am not marrying a minister. He's studying to be a professor...the other thing you can do with an Masters in Theological Studies. I work as a temp by day with Harvard University, and by night, I attend my master's degree classes. I estimate I'll have my degree locked up by the end of next summer, right before I get hitched. I'm hoping to work in Higher Educational Administration which means I will be the dean or higher up somebody at some school, someday. I may get a PhD at some point and switch to teaching government, germanic cultures, or some combination of the two.

I am a total political junkie, an ABBA (Anyone But Bush Again), and I love to travel and I love foreign culture. Right now, these last few weeks all I can think about is getting back to Europe. I lived in Sweden a year in high school, graduated there, and then went back in college. I'd love to see some new places though.

For now I don't have anything really more to say....so, to say the least....I'll go and write more later.
